My name is Dr Kylie Maidment. I have a PhD in Psychology and am a trained counsellor. I have a deep professional and personal understanding of both neurodivergence and co-occurring mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, OCD). I take a solutions-based approach and work with individuals and families to empower them by providing them with support, information, knowledge, options and resources.

I do work with older children/tweens/teens but only with their full willingness and consent.

FAQs

Who do you help?

I work with individuals who want to increase their knowledge of neurodivergence and mental health. I also work directly with older children/teens (but only with their full consent and willingness!). I have expertise in working with depression, anxiety and OCD.

How long is each session?

Each session is 1 hour.

How do I know if you are the right fit?

The most important question! Take time to read through my website. I love writing and regularly download my thoughts into blogs (and emails if you are subscribed via my website). If you feel I may be a good fit – you are welcome to book a free 15-minute phone or video call, please contact me via the link above. Take this time to ask me how I work and share what is going on for you. We can decide together what will work best. If you decide you do not want to continue, there are no questions asked.

What can I expect in the first session?

Consider, the first session as an exploration or a two-way interview where we ask each other lots of open-ended questions and explore the things that are working well for you and the things you would like to improve. The aim of the first session is to discuss what you need, set goals and see how we can move together towards the outcome you want.

How regularly should I see a counsellor?

I offer weekly or fortnightly sessions. Counselling is a commitment, and you will experience better outcomes from sessions if you attend regularly. I am very happy to discuss your individual needs.

How many sessions will I/we need?

This varies depending on the person. I encourage clients to make time in their schedule for themselves. On average, I find that new clients start to see positive effects after the first couple of sessions. Total duration of therapy will vary. For some clients, a single session may be all they need. Some people find that 3-6 sessions give them the support and tools they need to feel better equipped to move forward. Other clients may feel they need longer-term support. We can work together and discuss the length of time that will work best for you. CBT for OCD tends to require a longer number of sessions.

Fees and payment?

60-minute session: $130AUD. Payment can be made by direct deposit or via the website.

What is your cancellation policy?

Things happen! Please let me know as soon as possible if you need to change the time of your session. Failure to cancel within 24 hours of the session will incur a charge of 50% of the session fee.

Can I claim services via NDIS?

Counselling, one-on-one consults and parent education can be delivered using NDIS funding for self and plan managed clients. Counselling is considered a therapeutic support and can be utilised to help you, or your child meet your individual goals. Counselling and education are both capacity-building and capacity enhancing services. To access NDIS counselling services, you need to have the item “Improved Daily Living” in your (or your child’s) plan. This provides funds to access the services of allied health professionals such as counsellors (there are several line items you can use). To use NDIS funding you must be able to relate how being supported via these services will benefit your child and help them to achieve their NDIS goals).

Can I claim sessions on Medicare or PHI?

Counselling does not fall under the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS). Some Private Health Insurers do cover counselling services. Please check with your Private Health Insurer to see if you are covered. There is a benefit of attending a service that does not require a mental health care plan (privacy of health information being the most important).

What are the benefits of telehealth?

The biggest benefit of telehealth/zoom is that you can pick a counsellor from anywhere in Australia or NZ that offers the niche service that you need. Zoom sessions provide you with the convenience of attending counselling from the privacy of your own home.

Do I need a GP referral?

No, you do not need a GP referral or a mental health treatment plan to see a counsellor.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes! Confidentiality is a very important part of counselling. Counselling is a place where you can share sensitive information without feeling you need to be concerned about someone finding out. There are some exceptions to confidentiality that are clearly outlined in my intake forms (e.g., I am required to break confidentiality if you, or someone else, is in danger of harm). I adhere to the Code of Ethics outlined by the Australian Counselling Association. Please see HERE for further details. For further details on my data collection and privacy policies, please see HERE.

Is it normal to feel nervous before a first session?

Yes, completely normal. Many people are hesitant about attending their first session. It can feel quite overwhelming. However, be assured, counselling is a non-judgmental space, and I am committed to making sure you feel as comfortable as possible.
